What does Jesus' parable of the bridegroom teach us about joy and our relationship with Him?
THE PARABLE
"Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, ‘Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?’ And Jesus said to them, ‘Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.’" (Matthew 9:14-15)
In this passage, Jesus is addressing the disciples of John the Baptist who are perplexed about why Jesus’ followers do not fast as they do. The context is rich—Jesus has been celebrating the arrival of God's kingdom, and his presence is a joyous occasion. The reference to the bridegroom emphasizes that His ministry was a time for joy and celebration rather than mourning. This invitation to rejoice propels the entire conversation into a new understanding of divine grace.
JESUS' EXPLANATION
"The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast." (Matthew 9:15)
Jesus subtly reveals the depth of His identity as the bridegroom. His presence signifies the discordant joy of heaven meeting earth, a manifestation of God’s grace among His people. The anticipation of His departure hints at the suffering and sacrifice that are to come; yet it also serves as assurance that joy will mark the life of His followers as they await His return. His statement points toward the ultimate hope: eternal union with Christ.
COMMENTARY
In this parable, we are reminded of the consummate relationship we have with Christ, grounded in His grace and sovereignty. The notion of Christ as the bridegroom is pivotal in understanding our union with Him—exemplifying the affection and intimacy He desires with His church. As Reformed believers, we acknowledge that this relationship is predicated on God's initiating grace. Let us, therefore, rejoice in our salvation and actively await our bridegroom’s return. I challenge you today: reflect upon the joy of Christ in your life and consider how you can express that joy to others, being heralds of the grace that you have received.
