THE PARABLE

"Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and recline at table'? Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink'? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'" (Luke 17:7-10)

As Jesus spoke these words, He was addressing His disciples, providing them with crucial lessons on servitude and humility. In the preceding chapters, He had been outlining the nature of the Kingdom of God and the attitudes necessary for entry into it. The context was ripe for understanding that true greatness in God's economy is marked by humble service.

JESUS' EXPLANATION

"If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." (Mark 9:35)

While Jesus does not explicitly unpack this parable immediately, we can glean profound insights from His other teachings about servanthood. The essence of His message is that the Kingdom is upside down compared to worldly standards. Unlike the world's desire for recognition and reward, Jesus describes an economy based on humility and duty. In doing so, He reveals that our service to God is not for earning favor but a necessary response to His grace.

COMMENTARY

This parable speaks directly to our understanding of God's sovereignty and grace. We often find ourselves longing for recognition and appreciation in our acts of service, yet Jesus teaches us that those who serve in His name should not expect applause. We are called to fulfill our duties as unworthy servants, acknowledging our dependence on His grace. God is holy, and our good works do not merit His favor; instead, they flow from a heart transformed by the Gospel.
