Faith Article: The Parable of the Two Debtors
THE PARABLE
"A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?" Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." (Luke 7:41-43)
Jesus shares this parable with Simon the Pharisee during a dinner where a sinful woman anoints Jesus' feet with perfume. The Pharisees are shocked at Jesus' acceptance of the woman's actions, prompting Him to reveal the true nature of forgiveness and love through this parable.
JESUS' EXPLANATION
In the immediate context, Jesus is pointing out the disparity between external righteousness and true repentance. The sinful woman shows deep gratitude due to her forgiveness—her love springs from being freed of insurmountable debt. In contrast, Simon, who perceives himself as righteous, barely acknowledges the grace before him.
COMMENTARY
Jesus, in His grace, illustrates that our spiritual debt cannot be repaid by our merits. He calls us to realize our need for mercy. This parable showcases the holiness and compassion of God, who cancels our debts through Christ. In the Reformed tradition, we see this as God’s sovereignty in salvation—it is not the size of the debt that matters but the greatness of the grace given.
Today, let us be like the woman, grateful and full of love, recognizing the colossal debt from which we are freed. Let this awareness fuel our devotion—knowing that nothing we face exceeds the grace we have received in Christ.
