FAITH ARTICLE

Part A — THE PARABLE

Luke 13:6-9 (ESV): "And he told this parable: 'A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, "Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?" And he answered him, "Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down."'

Jesus shared this parable with an audience seeking understanding of God's kingdom, responding to questions about repentance and judgment. His intention was to illustrate the necessity of bearing spiritual fruit within the lives of believers. In the immediate context, Jesus had been warning of the need for repentance, compelling his listeners to consider their spiritual condition.

Part B — JESUS' EXPLANATION

Jesus did not provide a direct explanation of this parable within the text. However, drawing from the surrounding teachings, it is clear that the fig tree represents Israel, and by broader application, all of humanity's need to live fruitful lives in alignment with God's will. The patience of the vinedresser signifies God's grace and long-suffering, desirous that none should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).

This parable invites us to reflect on God's profound patience and our responsibility to respond to his grace. As R.C. Sproul often articulated, God's sovereignty affords him the right to expect fruitfulness from his creation; yet, as we see in Christ's intercession, his grace abounds, offering us time and the needed nourishment through the Holy Spirit. In Reformed theology, this touches upon perseverance of the saints — that genuine faith will inevitably produce fruit, reflective of God's transformative work in the believer. So, beloved reader, examine your walk with the Lord today. Are you living a fruitful life in response to Christ's patience? Consider the significance of repentance and resolve to deepen your roots in God's truth.
