FAITH ARTICLE

Part A — THE PARABLE

"As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. He said therefore, 'A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business..."

Jesus shared this parable with His disciples while traveling towards Jerusalem, where many anticipated that He would establish God's kingdom immediately. They were eager for deliverance from Roman rule, and Jesus used this story to adjust their expectations about the timing and nature of the kingdom.

Part B — JESUS' EXPLANATION

In this parable, Jesus likens Himself to the nobleman whose kingdom is yet to be realized in its fullness. He emphasizes faithfulness and diligence while awaiting the kingdom's consummation. The message is clear: genuine disciples are called to steward their time and gifts wisely, for the King will return and settle accounts.

Part C — COMMENTARY

The Parable of the Minas beckons us to recognize God's sovereignty and the grace with which He entrusts us. Our lives are an arena for faithful service; every resource and opportunity is a divine loan. The servants' varying responses reflect the diverse ways people acknowledge or deny Christ's lordship. In our reformed understanding, we affirm that while we labor under God's grace, our faithfulness is ultimately an outworking of His enablement and call. Like the servants, we aim to hear, "Well done, good servant!" Take this moment to evaluate: how are you investing the 'minas' our Lord has entrusted to you? Let His holy character inspire your faithfulness today.
