Faith Article: The Parable of the Householder's Treasure
The Parable
He said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old." (Matthew 13:51-52, ESV)
In the midst of His teaching on the kingdom of heaven, Jesus addresses His disciples, asking them if they understood the teachings thus far. Affirming their understanding, He then offers this parable. Positioned after a series of parables about the kingdom, Jesus heightens the importance of recognizing the treasures of new insights built upon the old, foundational truths. Here, Jesus is speaking to His disciples, preparing them for their role as stewards of this divine revelation.
Jesus' Explanation
While Jesus does not provide an explicit explanation of this parable, the context suggests that Jesus encourages His followers to value both the ancient truths of Scripture and the new revelations He is bringing. The broader narrative of Matthew emphasizes the fulfillment of the Old Testament in Jesus Christ. This underscores our responsibility to cherish both the heritage of the faith and God's unfolding promises.
Commentary
This parable illustrates that in God's providence, true wisdom keeps the balance of cherishing historical doctrines while being open to the Spirit's leading in fresh ways. Divine wisdom is never outdated but is enriched by a deeper understanding of God's sovereignty and grace. Like experienced scribes, we too are called to handle God's Word with reverence, drawing riches both ancient and new.
As we reflect on these truths, let us remember that the gospel is timeless, yet ever relevant. May we immerse ourselves in the Scriptures, allowing them to transform our minds for today's world. The treasure of knowing Christ is our greatest possession—hold it fast and share it freely.
