SECTION 1 — FAITH ARTICLE
Part A — THE PARABLE
And he said to them, "Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; and he will answer from within, 'Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything'? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs." (Luke 11:5-10)
Jesus recounted this parable while teaching His disciples about prayer. In the surrounding verses, He had just completed the Lord's Prayer, emphasizing God's holiness and our reliance on His provision. Addressing an audience familiar with the cultural nuances of hospitality, Jesus crafted a scenario both relatable and profound.
Part B — JESUS' EXPLANATION
Jesus' teaching here directs us to approach God with persistence. The key message is encapsulated in the immediate context when He continues, "And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." (Luke 11:9). This parable, therefore, underscores the importance of persevering in our prayers to God, who is ever willing to listen.
Part C — COMMENTARY
What a gracious promise this is! Jesus implores us to approach the Father with the boldness of children asking their parents, assured that our persistence is not annoying but cherished. Here lies a profound truth about God's nature—He is sovereign and yet intimately involved in every aspect of our lives. Our repeated prayers do not weary Him; they open our hearts to His unfolding will.
In this Reformed understanding, we recognize that our inclinations to persist in prayer are not of our own striving but a response to His effectual calling. Let us be encouraged to meet the throne of grace with bold confidence, trustingly laying our needs and praises before Him. Today, challenge yourself to bring one persistent prayer to God, trusting in His perfect timing and will.
