THE PARABLE

"For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away." — Matthew 25:14-15

In this parable, Jesus addresses His disciples, speaking to them about the Kingdom of Heaven. Surrounded by those who would soon witness the unfolding of God’s redemptive plan through His death and resurrection, the context is clear: Jesus wants to prepare His followers for the responsibilities they will inherit as stewards of God’s grace.

JESUS' EXPLANATION

"For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away." — Matthew 25:29

Jesus elaborates on the significance of the talents entrusted to the servants. The parable teaches us about accountability in our service to God. The underlying message is one of stewardship—how we manage what the Lord has given us is a reflection of our understanding of His character, particularly His generosity and expectations.

COMMENTARY

This signifies not only His sovereignty but also His grace, as He equips us to serve Him. The first two servants represent those who respond to God's grace and use their gifts wisely, producing fruit for the kingdom. In contrast, the third servant acts out of fear, failing to recognize the grace that has been lavished upon him.

As we reflect on this teaching, we are reminded of our calling to use the gifts God has provided each of us. Our response should be one of active engagement with our faith, not passive inaction.
