Part A — THE PARABLE
"From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." (Matthew 24:32-35 ESV)
Jesus shared this parable with His disciples during a discourse on the Mount of Olives. It was a time when He was preparing them for the events leading to His second coming and the end of the age. He urged them to stay vigilant, observing the signs of the times as an assurance of the fulfillment of His promises.
Part B — JESUS' EXPLANATION
Though Jesus does not provide a direct explanation of this particular parable, He emphasizes vigilance and awareness of His eventual return. In the broader context, He is teaching his followers to discern the signs of the times with the same natural expectation one might have for the turn of seasons. The budding fig tree becomes a tangible metaphor for understanding prophetic events as they come to fruition.
Part C — COMMENTARY
In this beautiful imagery of the fig tree, we see the unfolding of God’s sovereign plan. As Reformed theology often emphasizes, God's decrees are unchanging and His purposes will be accomplished. We are reminded that like a gardener cultivates with patience and expectancy, so should we await the Lord's return. The fig tree teaches that His promises are reliable; His word is unbreakable. Are we living each day with the assurance of God’s grace and holiness? Beloved, let this certainty imbue our daily walk with faithfulness and joyful expectation as we anticipate the fulfillment of Christ's promises. May this reflection inspire us to be watchful stewards of the present while actively waiting for His kingdom to come.
