FAITH ARTICLE

Part A — THE PARABLE

"Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake." — Mark 13:33-37 (ESV)

Jesus, speaking on the Mount of Olives, addressed His disciples about the future — both the coming destruction of the temple and the eventual end of the age. Against the backdrop of questions concerning signs and times, He urged a posture of vigilance and readiness.

Part B — JESUS' EXPLANATION

Though this parable does not come with a direct explanation like others, its meaning is clear within its context: there is an imminent and unpredictable return of our Lord. Jesus intended His listeners to live with a conscious awareness of His return, emphasizing preparedness and alertness as the servants are instructed by their master.

Part C — COMMENTARY

The parable of the Watchful Doorkeeper is a poignant reminder of our call to live diligently before God, an omnipotent Master who deserves our unwavering attention. In reformed theology, this urgency aligns with the sovereignty of God, who rules with perfect knowledge and timing, keeping His own and guiding them persistently toward holiness.

As we reflect on our daily routines, are we awake to God's presence and purpose in our lives? This parable challenges us to remain steadfast, knowing that faith's journey demands vigilance against spiritual slumber. Let's encourage one another to heed the call: Stay awake and persevere in faith for the glory of our sovereign God.
