SECTION 1 — FAITH ARTICLE
Part A — THE PARABLE
“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Luke 12:35-40, ESV)
In this parable, Jesus was teaching a crowd gathered around Him, including His disciples. As He approached Jerusalem, anticipation and tension were rising regarding His ministry's climax and the nature of His Kingdom. Amidst rising expectations, Jesus provided insight into the vigilance required of His followers, illustrating readiness with the analogy of servants awaiting their master's return.
Part B — JESUS' EXPLANATION
While Jesus doesn’t provide an explicit explanation within the narrative, the context makes His intentions clear. The emphasis is on the importance of being prepared and vigilant, teaching His followers that His return will be unexpected. The parable underscores the necessity of constant readiness, reflecting the broader Gospel narrative that highlights the sudden nature of the Kingdom of God's full realization.
Part C — COMMENTARY
This parable profoundly speaks to the doctrine of God’s sovereignty and the unexpected nature of His divine timetable. As Reformed theologians understand, it emphasizes the necessity of grace-enabled readiness, which is not of our own doing but a result of God working in us. Just as a baseball player must always be ready for the next play, so too must we, as believers, remain vigilant and prepared for Christ’s return. Let us be stirred by the Holy Spirit to live lives of watchful expectation, dedicating ourselves to the service of our Lord, so that when He returns, we might be found faithful. Dear reader, how will you choose to live today in light of Christ's imminent return?
