Exploring lasting impact in faith and the unforgettable matches from the MLB field
THE PARABLE
"You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet." (Matthew 5:13, ESV) "Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear." (Luke 14:34-35, ESV)
In these striking words, Jesus addresses His disciples, painting a vivid picture of the necessity of remaining true to one’s divine purpose. He speaks to them during His Sermon on the Mount and again when teaching about the cost of discipleship, emphasizing the intrinsic value and role His followers play in upholding and reflecting God's righteous standards in the world.
JESUS' EXPLANATION
Though Jesus does not provide an explicit interpretation in these passages, the metaphor of salt conveys a powerful truth. In biblical times, salt was a precious commodity used for preservation and flavor. Jesus uses this imagery to express that His followers are called to preserve divine truth and bring out the 'flavor' of God’s kingdom on earth. Salt losing its savor symbolizes disciples who have ceased to influence the world positively for Christ, rendered ineffective in their witness.
COMMENTARY
In Reformed theology, this parable reinforces the serious call to perseverance in grace, recognizing the Lord's sovereignty as He ordains His followers to be effective for His work. The stark warning that salt can lose its savor presses us to examine our lives daily. As believers, we are called by God to be distinct, to remain engaged with the world while not conformed to it (Romans 12:2). In His grace, we are empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit to live out our faith. Dear reader, may this parable be a gentle yet firm reminder to nourish your faith so that you might fully fulfill your divine call.
