Dive into the parable of servanthood and witness the Dodgers' strong performance.
THE PARABLE
“Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’” (Luke 17:7-10, ESV)
As Jesus journeyed towards Jerusalem, He engaged with His disciples, imparting lessons on faith, forgiveness, and duty. This parable is part of a broader dialogue highlighting the need for a faithful servant’s heart. Challenging prevailing cultural norms, Jesus used this story to frame the relationship between a master and his servant, underscoring a humble acceptance of one’s role and responsibilities.
JESUS' EXPLANATION
Unlike some parables where Jesus offers a direct explanation, the meaning here is embedded in the narrative's context. Jesus aimed to illustrate the rightful attitude of service in His kingdom—emphasizing duty over entitlement. By positioning His followers as servants, Jesus taught them that fulfilling God's commands does not warrant earthly accolades; service is its own reward in the realm of divine obedience and grace.
COMMENTARY
In this parable, we are reminded that our acts of service and duty, while important, do not earn God’s acceptance. In His infinite grace, He requires nothing beyond the good works prepared for us (Eph. 2:10). This echoes the Reformed understanding of God’s sovereignty and grace—the works we do flow from the gratitude of salvation already given, not as a currency for favor. Let us embrace a servant's heart, performing our duties with joy, knowing we serve a holy and gracious Master. Challenge yourself today: serve diligently, quietly, and joyfully, finding peace in being part of God's sovereign plan.
