THE PARABLE
"For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away." (Matthew 25:14-15 ESV)
In this well-known parable, Jesus addresses His disciples, teaching them about the Kingdom of God shortly before His crucifixion. The immediate audience includes a diverse group of followers, each with varied backgrounds and understanding. Here, Jesus answers the pressing question of how to live faithfully in anticipation of His return. The gentle tension builds as He speaks about accountability and the expectation of producing fruit with what has been given.
JESUS' EXPLANATION
"For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away." (Matthew 25:29 ESV)
Jesus, by sharing this parable, communicates profound truths regarding the gifts and responsibilities bestowed upon His followers. Each servant represents believers at different maturity levels, entrusted with varying resources. The consequences of their actions reflect the heart’s attitude toward God’s grace and truth. When we understand that God diplomatically allocates our spiritual gifts, we see a clear call to diligent stewardship in all areas of life.
COMMENTARY
In reflecting upon the character of God, we observe His sovereignty and grace profoundly manifesting in the parable of the talents. It illustrates the Reformed doctrine of God's gift grace and the call to steward those gifts responsibly. He does not bestow talents aimlessly; instead, He calls us—individually and collectively—to utilize them for His glory.
As you consider what God has entrusted you with—your skills, time, and resources—ask yourself, are you multiplying them for the Kingdom? Judgment Day will bring an accounting before the Lord, and we should face that day with confidence, knowing that our labor is not in vain. I challenge you to take an inventory of your talents today, committing to using them faithfully. Ask for God’s guidance in glorifying Him through your life, both on and off the baseball diamond.
