SECTION 1 — FAITH ARTICLE
Part A — THE PARABLE
“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he canceled the debt of both. Now, which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he canceled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” (Luke 7:41-43, ESV)
In this parable, Jesus is speaking to Simon the Pharisee, in whose house Jesus has been received. Simon, observing how a sinful woman anoints Jesus' feet with costly ointment, questions Jesus’ prophetic credentials internally. Jesus, knowing Simon's heart, tells this parable to shine a light on genuine forgiveness and gratitude.
Part B — JESUS' EXPLANATION
Jesus does not leave the parable open to interpretation. Through the question he poses to Simon and the following explanation, He contrasts the woman’s response to forgiveness with Simon’s. The point is clear: those who recognize the magnitude of their forgiven sins respond with greater love. Jesus is teaching that true appreciation of forgiveness is seen in the overflow of love to God and others.
Part C — COMMENTARY

This parable illuminates the grandness of God’s grace and challenges us to a heart posture of gratitude and love. The root of Reformed theology anchors us in the understanding of God’s sovereignty in salvation — it is by His divine initiative that we are drawn, forgiven, and loved.
Dear readers, let us consider our response to God's gracious forgiveness. Are we living lives marked by a profound love that reflects the lavish grace we’ve received? As we grow in understanding our forgiven state, may our hearts be gripped by a deeper love for our Savior, and may our lives be tangible reflections of His holiness.
