THE PARABLE
“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he canceled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, 'The one, I suppose, for whom he canceled the larger debt.' And he said to him, 'You have judged rightly.'” (Luke 7:41-43, ESV)
In the intimate setting of a Pharisee's home, Jesus addressed Simon and the attendees using the Parable of the Two Debtors. This moment followed an encounter where a woman, known to be a sinner, showed extravagant love and devotion to Jesus by anointing His feet. The parable was Jesus' response to Simon's judgmental thoughts about her actions.
JESUS' EXPLANATION
Instead of explicitly explaining the parable, Jesus expected His listeners to grasp the profound truth nestled within it: the correlation between our acknowledgement of sin's weight and our capacity to love. Jesus underscored a vital gospel truth — that forgiven sinners, recognizing the depth of their forgiven debt, love their Redeemer greatly, contrasting with those who perceive their moral debts as trivial.
