Faith Article
Part A — THE TEXT
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Psalm 91:1)
Part B — CONTEXT & MEANING
The book of Psalms is a compilation of songs, prayers, and praises that articulates Israel's worship and reliance on God. Psalm 91 is often revered as a psalm of protection, expressing assurance in the care and shelter of the Almighty. The imagery used—a shadow—evokes a deep sense of closeness and protection provided by God to those who find refuge in Him.
Part C — COMMENTARY
To dwell in the shadow of the Almighty is to live in constant awareness of His sovereignty and care. As R.C. Sproul aptly observed, it is in God's omnipotence that believers find their ultimate refuge—not as a refuge from all trouble, but certainly from ultimate harm. This shadow is a metaphorical canopy where faith gives rise to an abiding peace, echoing the assurance that nothing can thwart the purposes He has for those whom He calls His own.
